Misato Sato
I am an Associate Professorial Research Fellow and Deputy Research Director at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, London School of Economics and Political Science. I am also a Co-Director of the LSE Green Skills Lab, a Senior Associate at the LSE Centre for Economic Performance, a Co-Editor of the Environmental and Resource Economics journal, a DIW Fellow, and a member of the ESRC Environmental Social Science Strategic Advisory Group.
My research examines how to deliver a rapid, just low-carbon transition across firms, workers and capital markets. I study industrial decarbonisation, competitiveness and trade—estimating how carbon pricing, energy costs and global markets affect firms’ emissions, productivity, innovation and investment, and carbon leakage. I evaluate the design and effectiveness of climate and energy policies using empirical methods and microdata. In parallel, I am also interested in understanding how these shifts in production are reshaping labour markets—skills, wages, mobility, regional development and welfare — as well as capital markets — how investors perceive and price climate-related risks, including transition and climate-litigation risks, and the consequences for valuations and capital allocation. I collaborate with governments, industry, media and other stakeholders and to generate and communicate evidence that supports effective and equitable policy.
